The east of Mallorca

HIGHLIGHTS AND TIPS

East Mallorca looks like a compact version of the whole island. In this small area you can find all the geographical characteristics that make up the island as a whole. Mountains, valleys, sandy beaches, rocky bays, towns and villages – the Llevant region, in English East, enchants with its diversity like no other area in Mallorca.

Places in the east

  • Arta, Capdepera und Canyamel (Northeast)
  • Son Servera
  • Sa Coma
  • S’Illot
  • Cales de Mallorca
  • Manacor & Felanitx (inland)
  • Porto Cristo
  • Portocolom

The central towns for tourism are Cala Ratjada and Cala Millor in the northeast. These holiday resorts are very popular, offer large beaches and an extensive nightlife with bars and restaurants. In the surrounding area, the density of sports and leisure activities is very high. Because of the well-equipped beaches, the places are popular with families.

Destinations for city visits are Manacor and Artá. Manacor is considered the second largest city in Mallorca and is known for its furniture and beading industries. Many tourists come here to purchase the man-made pearls. The town also has a beautiful parish church and a town history museum. In contrast to the industrial Manacor, Artá has a largely Mediterranean character. The winding streets invite you to take picturesque walks and on the Calvary you can discover not only the fantastic view but also the medieval castle and the pilgrimage church of Sant Salvador.

Portocolom

Porto Colom was once the port of Felanitx. The town is located in the south-east on the island’s largest natural harbor and has grown around the harbour. To this day there are fishermen in the town of around 3500 inhabitants who go out to sea in their boats and pursue the old trade. In the past, the port was more important for the export of cargo and wine. The fishing boats and boat garages still determine the image of the place, which is now largely shaped by tourism. Evidence of this are the hotels and the marina, which can be explored on a walk along the promenade.

Porto Colom has a beautiful little old town with many nice shops, quaint bars and of course restaurants in the alleys and streets. As to be expected for a fishing village, you can eat excellent fish there. Many Mallorcans, but especially the residents of Portocolom, are convinced that this is the birthplace of Christopher Columbus, hence the name. However, there is no proof for this theory… but the original, tranquil place is also worth a visit.

Portopetro

Porto Petro is a fishing port in the southwest of Mallorca. The small town is near Santanyi. Its bay forms a real natural harbor consisting of two docks. The northern basin is reserved for fishermen. You can pursue your old craft here, because yachts are not allowed to dock there. Near Portopetro are the two popular and beautiful bays Cala d’Or and Cala Mondrago. They attract many tourists, so Portopetro itself is spared from the tourist crowds.

A small fishing village, a few shops and restaurants – there is little going on in Portopetro. A short visit to the village is still worthwhile: you can walk to the harbor and enjoy freshly caught fish in one of the restaurants. There are a few diving schools in town and trips along the coast are offered with a glass-bottom ship. There is an older lookout tower in the bay, which offers a beautiful view of the harbour.

Beaches in the east

In many places it is said that the most beautiful beaches on the island are on Mallorca’s east coast. In fact, the east coast is famous for its family-friendly bathing paradises and picturesque bays. In the large holiday resorts, the beaches are well-kept, with good infrastructure and fine sand.

  • Cala Marcal (bei Felanitx)
  • Cala Mondrago (bei Santanyi
  • Cala des Moro (bei Santanyi)
  • Cala Llombards (bei Cala Llombards)
  • Cala Mesquida im Nordosten (bei Cala Ratjada)
  • Cala Agulla im Nordosten (bei Cala Ratjada)
  • Cala Varques (bei Porto Christo)
  • Strand Canyamel (nahe Capdepera)

However, there are always coastal strips that are not developed for tourism, which are worth tracking down if you want to experience lonely rocky coasts and dreamy, little-visited bays. Bays with beautiful landscapes are, for example, Cala Mondrago, which has a wonderful sandy beach framed by rock faces and a pine forest, or Cala Llombards, surrounded by hills and rather quiet without infrastructure.

Cala Mondrago

In Cala Mondrago, two torrents, so-called torrents, flow into the Mediterranean Sea. The Torrent de Tomas and the Torrent d’en Roig ensure that the bay in the south of Mallorca forms a lush green nature park. The coastal incision is framed by rocks, pine and pine forest and opens up a nature reserve that can be explored on various hiking routes. Because of nature conservation, Cala Mondrago is not built over with hotel complexes and is a small paradise.

The natural beach has fine, white sand, the sea is clear and turquoise and slopes gently. The beach is about 70 meters wide and 200 meters long. The journey is well signposted from different directions. Adjacent to Cala Mondrago is the neighboring bay of Cala S’Amarador. It can be reached on foot.

Cala d’en Marcal

In the southeast of Mallorca, in the municipality of Felanitx, lies the bay of Cala d’en Marcal, about one kilometer south of the holiday resort of Portocolom. The bay cuts far inland and narrows as it does so. The fine sandy, white beach attracts many visitors to this beautiful bay. It is one of the largest beaches in the area. Due to the shape of the bay there is little swell in the water. The turquoise sea in the gently sloping bay is a paradise for snorkelers and divers, because the seabed consists exclusively of sand. Families with children also feel at home here. It is correspondingly well attended, especially in the high season.

Everything can be found here, from beach supervision to sun lounger and parasol rental to showers and toilets. At the edge of the bay there are restaurants and a beach bar invites you to linger. Cala d’en Marcal is lined with rocks and low cliffs, with pine trees at the back of the beach. In summer there is an area for playing beach volleyball. Boat tours to Cala d’Or and Cala Figuera are also offered. Getting to Cala d’en Marcal is easy and well signposted from all directions from Portocolom. Attention: the bay is also known as Cala Marcal or Calo Marcal.

Cala Murada

The bay of Cala Murada is located in the southeast of Mallorca, very close to the urbanization that is named after it. The nearest towns are Cala d’Or and Portocristo. The small bay is a natural harbor where you can also anchor by boat. It is lined with rocks on which houses stand. The sand is white and relatively fine. The beach slopes gently and is therefore very suitable for families. Although Cala Murada is not an insider tip, there are hardly any hotel complexes, so that the rush of visitors is not too large. Nevertheless, the beach is managed, there are showers and toilets as well as deck chair and parasol rental during the season.

A special feature of this beach is the Torrent des Fangar, one of the torrents typical of Mallorca that bring water from the interior and from the mountains to the sea. The water of the torrent accumulates behind the beach and magically attracts birds in particular. The Cala Murada beach is about 100m long and 80m wide. A staircase leads to the smaller beach of the neighboring double bay of Es Domingos.

Cala Romantica

Cala Romantica is a sandy beach with a bathing bay on Mallorca’s southeast coast, just a few kilometers from the fishing village of Portocristo. From there, head south until you reach the Cala Romantica junction. Cala S’Estany d’en Mas is the real name of this sandy beach. For marketing reasons, however, it was renamed Cala Romantica by the hoteliers nearby, which was intended to attract more guests. Nevertheless, the beach of Cala Romantica is one of the more moderately frequented, even in summer. Equipped with barrier-free access, public showers and toilets, lounger and parasol rental, Cala Romantica offers everything for a successful day trip.

The bay is picturesquely lined with limestone cliffs, on whose cliffs you can take wonderful walks that start from the bay. The beach of Cala Romantica stretches far inland, so it is 150 m wide. It has fine, white sand and slopes gently into the water.

LANDMARKS & DESTINATIONS

Ermita de Betlem (Northeast)

In the hills lies the hermitage Ermita de Betlem. The monastery was inhabited by a few monks until 2010. Castell de Capdepera (Northeast)

This imposing building, which is one of the largest castle complexes on the Balearic island, should not be missed if you are in the vicinity. The town of Capdepera is on the road that leads to Artà. The north-eastern municipality of Capdepera is one of the 53 independent municipalities of Mallorca and has around 11,000 inhabitants. The narrow, cobbled streets and the picturesque natural stone houses make the town of the same name a stop worth seeing on a trip to Mallorca.

The castle fortress on the Puig de Capdepera hill is located at an altitude of 159 meters in the north of the town. The building from the 13th century is one of the best preserved of its kind. From the fortress you have a wide view of the southwest of Capdepera and can see the panorama of the old stone houses and the vegetation dominated by palm trees. The partially well-preserved remains of the city walls of Capdepera, which surround the castle complex, can still be seen here today.

Castle of Capdepera

Until the 18th century, the castle served as a protection against attackers for the local residents. From the second half of the century the castle of Capdepera was no longer used for military purposes and stood empty for around 200 years. Finally, in 1983, it was decided to restore the castle and make it accessible to visitors. In the meantime, the building has become one of the most important sights in the region. The castle also includes the governor’s house and the Church of San Juan, two well-preserved structures that can be visited next to the inside of the castle.

Punta de Capdepera (Northeast)

Punta de Capdepera is the easternmost point of Mallorca and a beautiful vantage point at the same time. On the peninsula stand the 19th-century Far de Capdepera lighthouse and the ruins of the medieval Torre Embucada watchtower.

From Palma you can get here on the C717 towards Felanitx or the Ma-15 towards Manacor. The monastery can be reached on the road from Felanitx to Portcolom. A serpentine road branches off here, leading past a chapel, a mighty stone cross and a 70-year-old monument to Christ the King. Once you have finally reached the facility on the Puig de Sant Salvador, incidentally the highest elevation of the Serres de Llevant, you can first enjoy the impressive view that you have from here.
